| Infertility (differently called sterility) is the inability to conceive a child after, at least, one year of attempts. Sterility is not necessarily a female problem. Only 30% of cases are triggered by female factors. In another 30% of cases, sterility is because of male factors. The remaining cases are caused by a combination of male and female factors or by unidentified factors.
In most cases ovulation problems cause sterility in women. Some signs that a woman is not ovulating normally include irregular or absent menstrual periods. Less common causes of reproduction problems in females include blocked oviducts due to pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or operation for an ectopic pregnancy, physical problems with the uterus, uterine fibroids.
A great many factors can badly influence the female inability to conceive a child. They include age, tense situations, unhealthy diet, athletic training, obesity or being underweight, heavy smoking, addiction to alcohol and drugs, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), health problems that trigger hormonal imbalances.
At present more women conceive their first child when they are in their 30s or 40s. Actually, approximately 20% of women in the USA now have their first child after the age of 35. So, age is an increasingly common cause of fertility problems. Around 30% of couples where the female is over 35 have conception problems.
In men, hormonal imbalances, diseases, reproductive anatomy injury and obstruction, as well as sexual disorders can temporarily or permanently badly impact on conception. The longer some disorders are untreated, the fewer chances of recovery are. Men who smoke have a 13-17% lower sperm count that non-smokers. High alcohol intake can considerably decrease the sperm count. Tight fitting apparel and extended periods of sitting can bring on a decrease in sperm count through undue heating of the testicles. Marijuana, cocaine and anabolic steroids all reduce the sperm count and adversely affect motility.
Both men and females need specialist medical aid if pregnancy does not happen naturally. |
